Varnish in Packaging: Types, Benefits, Finishes & Sustainability

Varnish in packaging is the clear, and protective coating applied on the surface of the packaging. Varnish protects against scratch, water and dust by sealing the printed surface of the packaging.

Varnish also makes packaging look better by making the colors appear richer and more vibrant. The varnish in packaging makes the product seem high-end or luxurious.

What’s Varnish?

Varnish is a type of liquid with solvent made from resin. It is applied on the packaging to protect and enhance the visual effect. The varnish evaporates to leave a hard,  transparent and glossy film.

Clear varnish keeps the original color of the packaging, it is made by a combination of résine, drying oil and a solvent. It’s used for food boxes and cosmetics.

Tinted varnish adds color for creative effects, it’s mostly used for luxury items and high end technology products.

Varnish can be used on paper, cardboard, some plastics, and even metals. It’s important to choose the right varnish for each material to avoid cracking or poor adhesion.

Why Use Varnish in Packaging?

Varnish is used in packaging because it helps with protection, visual and tactile enhancement and durability.

  • Protection : Varnish protects the packaging by adding an extra thin film on the packaging surface to protect from scratch, sand, water and fingerprint. Varnish helps the packaging to stay looking new, fresh and clean during shipping, handling and sunlight.
  • Enhancement: Varnish enhances the visual by giving the package a tinted, glossy or matte effect, it boosts the vibrancy and saturation which gives a polished professional finish to make products stand out on store shelves.
  • Durability: Varnish helps packaging last longer by protecting it from wear and tear. It also ensures the product’s appearance stays in good condition for longer, which keeps the brand looking good.

How Does Varnish Surface Finish Impact Visual Appeal

Varnish in packaging comes in different finishes like Matte, Satin, Semi-Gloss, High Gloss and Soft-Touch, each affecting the look of the packaging:

  • Matte Finish: Matte finish is a type of finish that has  a low reflexivity without a glossy appearance, it gives a smooth and sophisticated look. Mostly used for premium products like high-end wine labels, art books.
  • Satin Finish: Satin Finish is a type of finish that gives a tactile feeling and makes the color appear more vibrant.  Blacks will look deeper, reds will look brighter, and blues will look as clear as the sky.  Satin finish is used in corporate brochures or consumer electronics products because it makes the colors pop.
  • Semi-gloss Finish: Semi-gloss finish is a bit shiny and helps protect the packaging while keeping it looking good. It’s often used for organic food packaging and beauty product labels.
  • High-Gloss Finish :High- gloss varnish is a type of shiny finish that has mirror-like brilliance, often used for luxury products, such as cosmetic, electronic and watches.
  • Soft-Touch Finish: Soft-touch finish is liquid coating applied via printing presses, which dries to a soft, velvet-like texture. Soft-Touch finish feels soft and smooth, like velvet. It is perfect for high-end cosmetics and luxury electronics packaging.

How does Varnish based materials affect sustainability

The type of varnish used in packaging can affect its environmental impact.  There are three main types of varnish:

  1. Water-Based Varnish: Water-Based Varnish has low emissions and is easier to recycle.  It’s better for the environment, but drying can use more energy.
  2. UV Varnish: UV varnish dries quickly using UV light.  It has very low emissions, but it’s harder to recycle, especially in paper products.
  3. Oil-Based Varnish: Higher VOC emissions, longer drying times, more complex disposal/recycling. Generally less favored for sustainability goals.

Applications of Varnish in Packaging

Varnish is used in luxury packaging to make perfume and jewelry boxes look shiny and special. Varnish makes color bright in cosmetic packaging and protects the design from getting worn out. Varnish used for food and drink packaging makes the product look good on shelves and keeps it safe from water. Soft-touch varnish gives a smooth, modern feel to packaging in electronics.

Brands use varnish carefully, focusing on important areas. Spot varnish is used on parts like logos to make them shine. This makes the key details stand out from the rest of the package. It helps brands make their products look better and get noticed without covering the whole package.

Varnish vs. Lamination: What’s the Difference?

IMG_256Varnish is a liquid coating applied directly to the packaging surface, offering a thin, customizable finish at a lower cost with more recycling compatibility.  Lamination, on the other hand, uses a thicker pre-formed film that provides superior durability but increases material costs and can complicate recycling.  While varnish allows selective application for visual effects, lamination typically requires full coverage and is limited by the film’s visual properties.

FAQ

Q1. Is varnish waterproof?
No, varnish is not completely waterproof. It can resist moisture, but it’s not meant to be submerged in water.

Q2. Can varnished packaging be recycled?
Yes, most varnished packaging can be recycled, especially when water-based or UV varnishes are used. Unlike lamination, varnish does not add a thick film that disrupts fiber recovery in paper recycling.
Q3. Is varnish food-safe?
Yes, food-safe varnishes are tested to ensure they don’t transfer harmful chemicals to food. They are safe for packaging that comes into contact with food.
